Labor Day
Eastern District will be closed for the holiday on Sunday, September 2 as well as Monday, September 3. So get all your BBQ shopping done early!
We’ve got grillable cheese (halloumi) as well as three kinds of fresh sausages from Brooklyn Cured, and 6 and 12-packs of summer beers are on sale.
Founders Night
As fall appears on the horizon, we’re restarting our in-store events series. Mark your calendar for Friday, September 21, when Founders Brewing will be in the store, offering samples and pouring growlers of their newest beers. Exact time and lineup is TBA.
New Cheeses
Lately we’ve been enjoying the cheeses from a newish producer in Lawrenceville, NJ: Cherry Grove Farm. They make their cheeses from raw milk from the herd of Jersey and Short Horn Milking Dairy Cattle that spend their days grazing on the farm’s organic pastures.
Cherry Grove’s Herdsman (top of photo) is a natural rind tomme style cheese, sharp and nutty. It’s great for melting over a burger or in mac & cheese, as well as snacking on with apples or bread.
Their Toma Primavera (center) has a washed rind and a smooth, creamy texture. The flavor reminds me of mushrooms, almonds, and tangy fruits. This should be delicious with the fresh figs and grapes that are in season now!
California’s Fiscalini Vintage Cheddar (bottom) has been around for quite a while (it is “vintage” after all) but it’s new to our shelves. Aged for at least 18 months, it develops the hard, crunchy texture of a Parmigiano Reggiano, but with the fruity, nutty, sharp flavors of a classic mature cheddar.
